According to the Georgia Gwinnett College website, Walter “Cam” Coursey stands at 5’8 152lbs and that might still be a stretch. Even with his “small” stature, he is the most lethal hitter in the NAIA. The Lanier High School graduate wasn’t recruited out of high school and was even redshirted when he first got to Georgia Gwinnett College. Nevertheless, he was patient and when the opportunity came he shined in his freshman season hitting just shy under .500, striking out just six times and helping his team get to the Avista World Series 2017-2018 season. With a year of growth behind of him, it would be interesting to see how the league would adjust to him. After watching him at practices and the opening series versus the defending national champions, this was not a case of beginners luck. Cam is a stud and is as clutch as they come. He has a knack for putting the barrel on the ball. This year, he is hitting .605 (41At Bats-25Hits), with only one strikeout. He was recently mentioned as part of Golden Spikes Watchlist. The Golden Spikes award is given out to the best amateur in baseball. He will look to join players like Bryce Harper and five others as the only non Division 1 athlete to claim this award.
The most interesting thing about Cam Coursey is not his size, but that he is a draft eligible sophomore. So the big question is – Will he garner any attention from any professional teams? He will be playing his summer baseball in the Coastal Plains League and will have to prove that he can continue to dominate with a wood bat in his hands. Cam Coursey seems to have been proving people wrong his whole life. We will see what left he has in store for the doubters
